Develop Attention to Detail
- The ability to multi-task and practice outstanding customer service skills
Understanding Pharmacy Functions
- Get to know the day-to-day life of a PhT in a retail pharmacy, hospitals, or in-patient pharmacies and in other organizations that provide pharmacy services.
Pharmacy study and skills practice for certification
- Study pharmacy theory and engage in hands-on clinical skills practice in preparation for PhT certification.
Critical Analysis of Classroom Topics
- Students learn brand and generic names for medications, and over-the-counter product equivalents.
- Review and learn to use the reference guides and dosage handbooks.
- Navigate pharmacy computer software; pharmacy math and pharmaceutical calculations.
- Learn pharmacology, the principles of pharmacokinetics, and the therapeutic classes of drugs.
- Review all the legal and ethical issues regarding drugs and medications.
Model Pharmacy Experience
- Students get hands-on experience in Caroline Center’s pharmacy skills lab and mock pharmacy through PioneerRx.
- Learn compounding medications and sterile preparations using aseptic technique and working under a pharmacy hood.
- Learn prescription deciphering and dosing, proper arrangement of medications on the pharmacy shelf.
- Work with mortar and pestle (compounding); and using scales and weights.
Externship Placement
- PhT candidates work 160 hours (4 weeks) in practical externships in a retail pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist and are posted to the Maryland Board of Pharmacy.
