During National Vocation Awareness Week, November 3 – 9, 2019,
Caroline Center celebrates the devotion to religious life
and the profound commitment to this ministry
of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
In speaking with Caroline Center Career Counselor Debbie Liesen, SSND,
we asked her to reflect upon the following:
Only when you are able to love and to receive love in return,
will you have the spirit to learn and the courage to be
who you were meant to be all along.
On having “the spirit to learn”
I believe having the spirit to learn means being open to learning from everyone and being able to learn from every possibility and from every experience. To really learn, one must be open to learn from all of life – from all that life offers us and all that life holds for us.
On “the capacity to love” and the importance of “knowing that you are loved”
Recognizing that we are loved and realizing that we have the capacity to love empowers us to embrace the spirit of learning. It allows us to reach out into life with open hearts and minds. We become eager, willing, and aware. More importantly, we become able to take advantage of every growth-filled, learning opportunity.”
On giving trainees the “courage to be who they were meant to be all along”
I always try to meet each woman right where she is - at this time in her life and in this place – and, then, I love them forward. I love them forward by listening and praising; encouraging and questioning; believing and modeling; caring and affirming; challenging and discussing; and, recognizing and recommending all that they are and all that they can be!”
